Mini "Dave Adrian" Update! interview by BAHAMA KIN
~~~*** 2/16/2004 ***~~~
bk: Dave Adrian your music is authentic, well crafted, & Intresting. Do you have any new tunes on the table?
da: Yes , enough to do many new cd's . I dare think some tunes are good too . But first , a full cd with the best songs ... 8 to 12 tracks , to be precise .
bk: Describe the ultimate mix.
da: All at this stage , a question of digital mixdown at dkstudio , in gent belgium , where RUDY DE KEIZER just does it right . We know one another well on that score , and it just works out fine . But I want to look forward to mixing and recording with Tootie in Bridgeport , Connecticut . A different approach , more analog , with his huge experience of recording " old but good " .
bk: Any new musicians for the new album?
da: I have great difficulty to find motivated musicians that are not in it for the money over here . When that comes , I have a full , very good line up . The U.S. : I would like to use the " Mambo sons " people , or CONNECTICUT musicians ... Unless something else comes along .
bk: Dave I listen to your music daily, Great songs! Patsy is a great musician as well, Describe Patsy's Approach to the Tracks when Recording.
da: She has great ideas for tunes ; I do the music and the mix .
bk: Does Patsy write lyrics?
da: Abolutely ; We have many songs in the bag : " the Zoo " " Do'nt waist your time " And many more , up to 8 songs , all pre mixed .
bk: where can one get her CD
da: We have one master . with : " Each and every time " " Atom bomb " but no distribution network , as usual . So we are not helpless , but well stuck . Some local people find the first title great .
bk: I'll help promote her music as well Dave, I am quite sure that there are hits waiting to be discovered soon. You and Patsy should do a video single together.
da: YES . Again obstruction at local level . They call it over here " an evolutionary situation " that has been going on for four years . Standstill is more the word .
bk: With TV & Books (more on that later)
Do you have a DVD-CD-Book / boxset planned?
da: This was planned four years ago , indeed , as is absolutely a must .
bk: Any Studio tips for the Musicians? Preparations?
da: I know what to do , only a question of money , as usual , maybe we can ask Britney Spears or Michael Jackson for financial co production support ; We have to keep a good sense of humor .
bk: Have you spoken to Kweevak Radio lately?
da: Yes . Richard Lynch is a great dude . A show is agreed for Febuary . But this
TV documentary mess over here has been capting all my energy with the Belgian media . All explained on " Kweevak " radio show ; see " news " update ...
bk: Sean Laskey has done some video work. Describe the latest news on that.
da: Great , that is lol ! Sean came over here last year , and filmed a lot of outdoor shots live for my websites . Then comes along his tv project . He mails me an interview , kicking himself for not having filmed that over here . We then use an idea to mount some recent press pictures from a photographer agency to paste as a background of the answers I mailed back to him . But it all turned out fine : a French friend filmed in different locations in Brugge with many angles the whole interview , so he has a lot of material , and it will come out fine : Sean is a " doctor " as you , Bahama Kin ! Knows what he is doing , rest now well assured !
bk: Where can one get Seans CD's?
da: I gather he has the same problem as me : distribution with a shop network . I do not know precisely what he is up to on that score ; I would like to know : his inventive ideas would be a great help to me and Patsy projects .
bk: What would musicians do without the internet?
da: A major topic ; The Net is the total communication tool for musicians of all times ; a miracle for us all . But : " Live " is where the money lies for the time being ; We only survive through that . Danny Rockett quote : " It helps enormously , but it is only part of the answer " . No one at this point can solve the selling on the Net problem , no matter all the great " Independents " try . Too many bands , not enough selective outlets . Extremely controversial point , the Corporation world against the Independent community . I reckon mp3 , digital selling is part of the answer ; a total unity is needed to force the issue and the media to expose the enormity of this problem .
bk: Moving on here! what would you like your fans to know about any new projects?
da: Another topic indeed : Who is Dave Adrian ? A Bob Dylan style artist ? NO ! Only similarity is the " nasal tone " , borrowed from Woody Guthry , as Bob did , and the general outlook on things , feelings , I feel very close to . Some form of exposure has to unfold , and distribution , to fully thrush forward what I have to offer , as myself and all my other production projects , books , film scripts , and more . It all there , but it needs " dynamics " and that hes to do with money . If that does not come , it just goes on , at street level and more . I am quiet confident , as part of the " winds of change " to come ... Too much " hype " in the music industry kills all exposure for motivated musicians . But the public has to come to terms with this . When it stops buying the reflections of mediocrity , things will unfold by themselves .
bk: What bands would make the ultimate tour?
da: " Crazy horse " , but any band that just has that thing . I play alone , in my head I hear the musicians I need . Rythm section is essential ; drums and bass first . A fluid drummer , hard , but with a good swing and brushes technique . A powerfull bass , with creative melodic line full wack with long against the melody sustained lines , to enhance and support the songs . no jazz here ; pure blues rock professional drive .
bk: Where would be the ultimate places to play.
da: I think anywhere , from cool small venues to bigger outdoors : what counts to me , is the acoustic quality of the surrounding ; some halls are appaling , some great ; all acoustic dynamics and context , the word that makes a gig magic , maybe with the help of the full moon , a good crowd , and all the intricate mixture that just makes the ultimate gigs of Rock ...
bk: Describe for us : A rock musicians day.
da: Kids to school , Internet immediately , kind of " what's going on out there " syndrom , guestbook , mails , etc... Then mundanities , if an inspirational day , a song goes down , all for later . Later in the day , " live " work for the survival , and after half an hour " get in down " . Then home to my dear wife , a center of my life .
bk: ok Dave this mini-interview, is a Dave Adrian update, any last words or links
that you may wish to express?
da: I do not know about the U.S. , but over here it is just ... undescriptable . Power to the music and the people , the rest is all bitterness , satirical humor , politics , narrow minded conditionning , jealousy an mess at local level ; it has to mature , as everything . I might be a dreamer , but rock music moves America from the roots of culture . Here , it is a superficial social convenience for the majority , secondary . Only basic instinct draws the listeners , but that is good enough . The media has killed music with hype and censorship . Not for all , it is what I am here for , under the midnight sun of lost sweet lies . Or the cutting edge of rock reality gone down the sink of convenience .
( I stop , it's getting boring for the readers ... )
Thanks to BAHAMA KIN , the giant exchange energy center of all times for musicians .
Long may he run .
bk: Thanks Again My Friend!
da: Indeed!
